Rebounding is a fantastic exercise for those with Lymphedema, arthritis sufferers and other similar conditions.
Lymphedema is a swelling that develops as a result of an impaired lymphatic system. It can affect any part of the body but is most commonly seen in an arm or a leg. Although thought to be relatively uncommon, a recent study has estimated that up to 10 million Americans may be affected by this condition.
Rebounding affects the lymphatic system much like a massage does. The lymphatic system is the metabolic rubbish bin of the body. It rids you of toxins such as dead and cancerous cells, nitrogenous wastes, fat, infections viruses, heavy metals, and other assorted junk cast off by the cells.
Unlike the cardio-vascular system, there is no “pump” driving the fluid round the body. When on the rebounder, the “jump” motion at the top of the jump forces the lymphatic valves to open, the “push” motion closes these valves at the bottom of the jump. This creates a “pump” effect which effectively moves and recycles the lymph and the entire blood supply through the circulatory system many times during the course of the rebounding session, providing a free-flowing system that drains away the potential poisons from our body.
This lymphatic drainage eliminates waste products quickly and efficiently both during and after exercise (lactic acid dissipation).
Get started with a gentle bounce, 2 -3 minutes once or twice each day, with your feet staying on the mat surface – this is called the “health bounce”. If you have balance problems due to inflammation then use the stability bar.
Gradually progress to small jumps off the rebounder. At no time, even during vigorous exercise, will your feet leave the mat surface by more than 6 inches. You can bounce to your own music and style, or following the exercise routines that are on the Compilation DVD that comes with the rebounder; then progress to over 20+ different DVD workouts as you feel stronger and more confident.
SUCCESS STORY: Marion Eloff, London
I am 33 years of age and suffer from primary lymphedema in both my lower legs since I was a baby.
I started doing rebounding classes in February 2013 and the benefit was the best I have ever experienced from any kind of exercise.
I felt much better, had more energy, my legs were less swollen and I lost weight very quickly.
I started enquiring about the special rebounders with the instructors and I was given James from Rebound Fitness’ details.
I phoned James and explained my situation and how rebounding has helped me and that I would like to purchase a rebounder for home use as the classes are not at times during the week that I can attend with a full time job.
My Pro rebounder and the DVD was delivered the next day to my work address and I have been using it ever since and the benefits are fantastic for my lymphedema and overall health. I rebound most days and feel great! I bounce for 5 minutes in the morning and 5 minutes at night. And sometimes I follow the DVD workouts.
I would highly recommend for any person suffering from lymphedema to start rebounding using a good quality rebounder and as part of your daily health routine.
